About Justene Williams

Justene Williams was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, in 1970. She studied art at Western Sydney University and earned her degree in 1991. Before becoming a full-time artist, she also trained in dance. She even worked as a window dresser, arranging displays in shops.

In 2005, Williams moved to Boston, USA. This move changed her art style a lot. She later returned to Sydney and got her Masters of Visual Art degree in 2006. Today, Justene Williams teaches art at the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane. She is also in charge of the sculpture department there.

Her Art Style

Justene Williams first became known in the 1990s for her photography. Back then, she often used simple disposable cameras. She would take pictures of everyday places like shopping malls and shop displays. This was linked to her experience working in retail.

Later, she started to plan her photographs more carefully. Her early photos often looked a bit blurry or distorted. This gave them a unique, simple, or "lo-fi" look.

After moving to the United States in 2005, Williams began to create detailed costumes. She would then perform while wearing these costumes, often in front of a camera.

More recently, Williams creates large art installations. These often include videos and sculptures. Her exhibitions like The Curtain Breathed Deeply (2014) and Handbag Hammer Meditation (2015) show this style. Her work often includes ideas from modern art movements like Dada.
