Jörg Ohm (born March 14, 1944 – died May 21, 2020) was a talented football player from East Germany. He played as a defender, which means his main job was to stop the other team from scoring goals. Ohm played in the top football league in East Germany, called the DDR-Oberliga. He played for two famous clubs: Chemie Leipzig and 1. FC Magdeburg. During his career, he helped his teams win the championship four times between 1964 and 1975.

Starting His Football Journey

Jörg Ohm began playing football when he was young. He joined the youth team of BSG Lokomotive Haldensleben. This club was located north of Magdeburg, a city in Germany.

Moving to a Bigger Club

In 1962, Jörg Ohm moved to a bigger club called SC Lokomotive Leipzig. This was a step up in his career. Before joining, he had already played four matches for the East Germany Under-21 national team. This showed he was a promising young player.

Playing for Chemie Leipzig

In 1963, football in the city of Leipzig was reorganized. Jörg Ohm became part of a new team called BSG Chemie Leipzig. Some people thought this team had less potential than another new club, but they proved everyone wrong.

Winning the Championship

At the end of the 1963–64 season, BSG Chemie Leipzig surprised everyone by winning the championship! Jörg Ohm played in four matches during this winning season. He stayed with Chemie Leipzig until 1968. In total, he played 33 matches for the club.

Cup Success

Chemie Leipzig also won the FDGB-Pokal (the East German Cup) in 1966. However, Jörg Ohm was not part of the final squad for that match.

Time at 1. FC Magdeburg

In the 1968–69 season, Jörg Ohm joined 1. FC Magdeburg. This move marked a new chapter in his career.

Scoring in the Cup Final

Ohm won the FDGB-Pokal for the first time with Magdeburg in 1969. He played in the final match and even scored two goals! Magdeburg won the game 4–0 against FC Karl-Marx-Stadt.

More League Titles

Jörg Ohm was part of the Magdeburg team that won the league championship three more times. These wins happened in 1972, 1974, and 1975. Even though he was part of the winning squads, he played fewer matches in these later championship seasons.

European Competition

In 1974, 1. FC Magdeburg achieved a huge success. They won the 1974 European Cup Winners' Cup Final by beating AC Milan. This was a major European trophy. However, Jörg Ohm only played in one match during that European cup season. He was not in the team for the final.

End of His Playing Career

The 1974 season was the end of Jörg Ohm's top-league career. In his six years with 1. FC Magdeburg, he played in 78 matches. This brought his total top-league appearances to 111. He continued to play for Magdeburg's reserve team until 1976. The club officially retired him from playing before a match against F.C. Hansa Rostock.

Becoming a Manager

After his playing days, Jörg Ohm became a football manager. He started managing Stahl Blankenburg in 1976. This team played in the second-tier DDR-Liga.

Coaching Success

Ohm led Stahl Blankenburg to good results. They finished second twice and third once in their division. Between 1981 and 1983, he managed another DDR-Liga team, Lokomotive Stendal. However, this team was moved down to a lower league in 1983. His last management job was with Chemie Ilmenau for the 1983–84 season. After managing, Ohm served on the board of Lok Stendal until 2006.
