Jørgen Ingmann (born Jørgen Ingmann Pedersen; 26 April 1925 – 21 March 2015) was a famous Danish guitar player. He played both jazz and pop music. Jørgen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He became well-known in Europe and had a big international hit song called "Apache" in 1961.

Later, he and his wife, Grethe Ingmann, won the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest. They won with their song "Dansevise".

Jørgen Ingmann's Music Career

Jørgen Ingmann Pedersen was born in Copenhagen. He started playing the guitar with a jazz violinist named Svend Asmussen. This was in the 1940s and early 1950s. Their group was called the Unmelancholy Danes.

Jørgen was inspired by an American guitarist named Les Paul. Les Paul was also a pioneer in recording studio technology. In the mid-1950s, Jørgen set up his own music studio. There, he learned new ways to record music. He used techniques like multi-tracking and distortion. Multi-tracking means recording different parts of a song separately and then putting them together. Distortion changes the sound of the guitar. He often played the bass and drums himself for his recordings. He started releasing music under the name Jørgen Ingmann & His Guitar.

His Hit Song "Apache"

In late 1960, Jørgen recorded his own version of the song "Apache". The original song was made by a British group called the Shadows in June 1960. Jørgen's cover version of "Apache" became a huge hit in 1961. It reached number 1 in Canada and number 2 in the United States. It also did well in Germany.

He also recorded other popular songs. He remade "Anna" by Silvana Mangano, which was also successful in the US. In the early 1960s, he had many hit songs in Germany. These included "Pepe" (1961), "Anna" (1961), "Violetta" (1962), "Drina Marsch" (1964), and "Zorba le Grec" (1965).

His recording of "Marchen Til Drina" also topped the charts in Denmark in 1963. He also recorded versions of "Tequila" and "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie".

Winning Eurovision

Jørgen also performed as part of a duo with his wife, Grethe Ingmann. Their duo was called Grethe og Jørgen Ingmann. In 1963, they won the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix competition. This meant they would represent Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest 1963. They won Eurovision with their song "Dansevise" (which means Dance Ballad). The music was by Otto Francker and the lyrics by Sejr Volmer-Sørensen.

One of his best jazz albums was called Guitar in Hifi. It featured many songs written by Hoagy Carmichael. In the USA, this album was known as Jorgan Ingmann Swings Softly.

Personal Life and Passing

Jørgen and Grethe met in 1955 and got married in 1956. They later divorced in 1975. Grethe Ingmann passed away on 18 August 1990, at the age of 52. Jørgen Ingmann died on 21 March 2015, when he was 89 years old.
