Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Yopaat was a very important leader of the ancient Maya city of Quiriguá. He was also known by names like Cauac Sky or Butsʼ Tiliw. He helped Quiriguá become a powerful city.
King of Quiriguá
Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Yopaat ruled Quiriguá from 724 AD to 785 AD. His time as king was very important for the city.
Defeat of Copán
The biggest event during his rule happened in 738 AD. Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Yopaat's army defeated the city of Copán. The ruler of Copán, named Uaxaclajuun Ubʼaah Kʼawiil (also known as "18 Rabbit"), was captured. This was a huge victory for Quiriguá.
Before this, Quiriguá was under the control of Copán. But after the defeat, Copán became weaker. This allowed Quiriguá to become a strong and independent city.
Quiriguá's Golden Age
For the next 38 years, Quiriguá experienced a "golden age." Skilled stone carvers created amazing sculptures. These included large stone monuments called stelae and animal-shaped carvings called zoomorphs. They celebrated their famous king, Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Yopaat.
Quiriguá became fully independent. It also gained control of an important trade route. This route went from the Caribbean Sea into the Maya world.
Death and Legacy
Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Yopaat died in 785 AD. There is a special stone at Quiriguá, called Zoomorph G. It is believed to be his funeral marker.
After him, two other kings ruled Quiriguá: Sky Xul and Jade Sky. Each ruled for about ten years. However, neither of them achieved as much as Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Yopaat. He is remembered as Quiriguá's greatest leader.
