Sky Xul was an important king (also called an ajaw) of the ancient Maya people. He ruled the city-state of Quiriguá, located in what is now Guatemala. Sky Xul was in charge from about 785 CE to 795 CE.
The Reign of Sky Xul
Sky Xul became the ruler of Quiriguá about 78 days after the death of K'ak' Tiliw Chan Yopaat. Many historians believe that K'ak' Tiliw Chan Yopaat was Sky Xul's father.
Sky Xul's rule lasted for about 10 to 15 years. During this time, Quiriguá remained an active and important city. This was special because many other Maya cities were starting to decline around this period. This decline is known as the Classic Maya collapse.
Amazing Stone Art
Even though other cities faced problems, Sky Xul made sure that Quiriguá continued to create amazing art. He ordered the creation of three large animal-shaped sculptures, called zoomorphs. He also had two altars made. These artworks are still considered incredible examples of Maya stoneworking.
Sky Xul passed away sometime between 795 CE and 800 CE. He was succeeded by Jade Sky, who was the last known ruler of Quiriguá.
