Kʼan I (also known as Ruler II, Lord Jaguar, and Antenna Top I) was an important ancient Maya king. He ruled the city of Caracol, which is located in modern-day Belize. Kʼan I was king from April 13, 531 AD, until about 534 AD.
Biography of Kʼan I
Kʼan I was the son of a previous king, Yajaw Teʼ Kʼinich I. Some historians believe his father might have been the son of Kʼahkʼ Ujol Kʼinich I and a noblewoman called Lady of Xultun.
Monuments and Records
Two important stone carvings, called monuments, are linked to Kʼan I. These are Stela 16 and Altar 14. Stelae are tall, carved stone slabs, and altars are often round stones placed in front of them.
Another monument, Stela 15, was made from slate instead of the usual limestone. Because slate breaks more easily, this stela is now in many pieces. However, it seems to record Kʼan I becoming king. The carving suggests that a higher power or authority helped him take the throne. We don't know if this was another powerful ruler or a god.
The text on Stela 15 also mentions an attack on Oxwitzaʼ. This was the old name for Caracol. It also talks about leaders from Caracol and Tikal, another major Maya city. But it's not certain if these events happened during Kʼan I's time as king.
Family Life
Kʼan I's wife was Lady Kʼal Kʼinich. They had a son named Yajaw Teʼ Kʼinich II, who later became king after his father. Kʼan I also had another son named Chekaj K'inich.
