K-9 and Company was a special TV show from 1981. It was a "spin-off" from the famous science fiction series Doctor Who. A spin-off is a new show that uses characters or ideas from an older, popular show. This special featured two characters from Doctor Who: Sarah Jane Smith and K-9.
Sarah Jane Smith was played by Elisabeth Sladen. K-9 is a clever robot dog. Both characters had traveled with the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who. However, they had never been on screen together before this special. Only one episode, called "A Girl's Best Friend", was made. The TV channel decided not to make a full series of K-9 and Company.
What is K-9 and Company?
K-9 and Company was a single TV episode that aired on December 28, 1981. It was meant to be a pilot, which is like a test episode. If people liked it, more episodes would be made. The story followed Sarah Jane Smith as she met K-9 again. K-9 is a very smart robot dog who can talk and help solve problems.
Main Characters
Sarah Jane Smith
Sarah Jane Smith is a brave and curious journalist. She was one of the most popular companions of the Doctor. She often helped him save the universe. In K-9 and Company, she starts a new adventure without the Doctor.
K-9
K-9 is a loyal and intelligent robot dog. He has many gadgets and a laser in his nose. He can float and is very helpful. He often says "Affirmative, Master!" or "Negative, Mistress!" He is a fan favorite from Doctor Who.
Why Only One Episode?
The BBC, the TV channel, decided not to make more episodes of K-9 and Company. This was because of changes happening at the BBC at the time. Even though the show did not continue, both Sarah Jane Smith and K-9 remained popular. They later appeared in other Doctor Who spin-off shows. Sarah Jane Smith even got her own successful series called The Sarah Jane Adventures many years later.
