Karimpumannil Mathai George (1914–2002), also known as Dr. K. M. George, was a very important writer and teacher from Kerala, India. He was a brilliant scholar and a literary critic. He was also great at organizing big projects.

Dr. K. M. George is famous for being a pioneer in studying different Indian literatures together. He received many high honors. These include the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, which are top awards from the Indian government. He also won the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, Kerala's highest literary award.

Life Story

K. M. George was born on April 20, 1914. His birthplace was Edayaranmula in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. His parents were Kurien Mathai and Mariamma.

He went to several schools, including Malakkara Primary School and St. Thomas School. He then studied at Madras Christian College (MCC). Later, he earned a degree in Mathematics from Union Christian College, Aluva. He started his career teaching at MCC. In 1941, he earned a master's degree in Malayalam literature. This was from the University of Madras.

George married Eliyamma in 1944. He passed away on November 19, 2002, in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 88 years old.

His Contributions

Dr. K. M. George wrote about many different parts of literature. He was a skilled writer for newspapers and magazines. He is known as the "father of the encyclopedia in Kerala." This means he played a huge role in creating the Malayalam Encyclopedia.

He also edited many important books about Indian literature. He traveled all over the world and wrote about his journeys. He was a playwright, a biographer, and a literary critic. He knew both English and Malayalam very well. He also understood many other Indian languages. He wrote over 50 books and translated several works into Malayalam. He also edited more than 10 large collections of writings.
