Pathanamthitta District is a special area, or district, located in the southern part of Kerala, India. The main office for the district is in the town of Pathanamthitta. This district has four important towns called municipalities: Tiruvalla, Adoor, Pathanamthitta, and Pandalam.

In 2001, about 1,231,577 people lived here. This made it one of the least populated districts in Kerala. Pathanamthitta was also the first district in India to be declared completely free of polio. This means no one there had polio anymore. It is also known as one of the richest districts in India, with very few people living in poverty.
