K. M. Mani: A Political Journey
Early Life and Family
K. M. Mani was born into a Syrian Catholic family. His parents were Karingozhackal Thomas Mani and Aliyamma. He began his political journey as the Congress president of the Marangattupilly ward.
He was married to Kuttiyamma, who was a cousin of the well-known Congress leader P. T. Chacko. They had six children together: five daughters named Elsa, Sally, Anie, Tessy, and Smitha, and one son, Jose K. Mani.
A Long Political Career
Before becoming a full-time politician, K. M. Mani worked as a lawyer. He was an active member of the Indian National Congress party. From 1960 to 1964, he served as the Secretary for the Kottayam District Congress Committee.
Becoming a Minister
Mani joined the Kerala Congress party in 1965. He was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1965 from the Pala area. He won every election that followed, a total of twelve times. This means he was elected in 1967, 1970, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016. He never lost an election in the Legislative Assembly.
He held many important ministerial positions over the years:
- Minister for Home Affairs (1977-1979)
- Minister for Finance and Law (several terms between 1980 and 1986)
- Minister for Irrigation and Law (1987)
- Minister for Revenue and Law (several terms between 1987 and 2006)
The Theory of the Toiling Class
K. M. Mani developed a special idea called the 'Theory of the Toiling Class'. This idea helped him connect with many different groups of people. According to his theory, farmers, farm workers, and other laborers all belong to the working class. He believed they should work together to protect their rights.
Mani thought that farmers and farm workers were like two sides of the same coin. He felt their unity was very important for improving the agriculture sector. This idea proved to be true, especially in the central Travancore region. He first introduced this idea at a party meeting in 1973. This theory was special because it came at a time when other political ideas often separated people into 'laborers' and 'rich men'. Mani's economic ideas and his 'Toiling Class' theory were very important for the growth of the Kerala Congress party.
Key Political Moments
In 1979, K. M. Mani started his own party, the Kerala Congress (Mani). This happened after he separated from another Kerala Congress leader, P.J. Joseph.
Later, in 1985, different parts of the Kerala Congress party decided to join together. K. M. Mani's party, along with others, formed a united Kerala Congress. However, this unity did not last long, and the party split again in 1987.
Mani was the Longest-serving MLA in the history of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. This means he served in the state assembly for more years than anyone else.
In 2009, Mani received the P. R. Francis award. This award recognized him as the best social worker in Kerala.
Stepping Down from Office
On November 10, 2015, K. M. Mani resigned from his position as Minister of Finance and Law in Kerala. This decision came after a period of public discussion and political debate. He was also the Chairman of a special committee for state finance ministers on Goods and Services Tax (GST).
On May 9, 2016, Mani won his 13th election in a row from his home area of Pala. He defeated his opponent, Mani C. Kappan, by 4703 votes.
Author and Legacy
K. M. Mani was also an author. He wrote several books about economic topics. These include Fiscal Problems of Kerala – Causes and Remedial Measures, The People's Socialism, and The Eighth Five Year Plan – An alternative approach. He also presented a paper on "India and Globalisation: Asian Economic Community – Need of the Day" at a national meeting in New Delhi in 1994.
His idea for the Karunya Lottery Benevolent Scheme was very helpful. This scheme aimed to provide financial help to poor people using money from lottery sales. His 'Theory of the Toiling Class' was even presented in the British Parliament.
His Final Years
K. M. Mani passed away on April 9, 2019. He died at Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi due to a lung condition called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
