Sir Krishnarajapur Palligonde Puttanna Chetty CIE (born April 29, 1856 – died July 23, 1938) was an important Indian leader and helper. He worked for the British government in India and gave a lot of money to help people. He was also the very first President of the Bangalore city government.

Early Life and Learning

Puttanna Chetty was born in 1856 in Bangalore. His family belonged to the Lingayat community. He went to school at the Central College in Bangalore. After finishing his studies, he started working for the government of Mysore in 1875.

His Work and Achievements

Puttanna Chetty had many important jobs. From 1884 to 1898, he managed traffic for the Mysore state railways. Then, from 1898 to 1906, he worked as a Deputy Commissioner. This meant he was a senior officer in charge of a district.

From 1906 to 1912, he was a member of the Bangalore City Council. This group helped make decisions for the city. In 1913, Puttanna Chetty was chosen to be the President of the Bangalore city government. He held this important role until 1919.

During his time as President, he helped open the Victoria Hospital. He also gave a lot of his own money to help the public. This showed he cared deeply about his community.

Later, in 1925, Puttanna Chetty was elected to the Mysore Legislative Council. This was like a parliament for the region. He also served as the Chairman of the Bank of Mysore and the Central Co-Operative Bank. He was even the Chairman of the Sri Krishnarajendra Mills. He was also a fellow at Mysore University, which is a high honor.

Puttanna Chetty also led the Rao Bahadhur Dharmapravartha Gubbi Thotadappa Charities. He did this from 1910 until he passed away in 1938.

His Passing

Puttanna Chetty died in 1938. He was 82 years old.

Special Awards and Honors

Puttanna Chetty received many special awards for his hard work. In 1911, he was given the title of Diwan Bahadur. This was an honor given by the British government in India.

In 1917, he became a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire. This was another high award. Then, in 1925, he was made a Knight Bachelor. This meant he could use "Sir" before his name.

He also received the 1911 Durbar Medal. In 1914, he was given the Gold Kaiser-i-Hind Medal. This medal was for public service in India.

How He is Remembered

Puttanna Chetty is still remembered today. On April 29, 2017, people celebrated his 161st birthday. This event took place at the Free Veerashaiva Students Hostel. He had started this hostel in 1938 to help poor students.

The famous Bangalore Town Hall in Bengaluru is named after him. This shows how important he was to the city.
