Kabumpo in Oz is an exciting adventure story from 1922. It's the sixteenth book in the famous Oz series and the second one written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. This book was special because it was the first time Ruth Plumly Thompson was fully named as the author on the cover. Before this, her first Oz book, The Royal Book of Oz, had L. Frank Baum's name on it instead.

The Start of a Royal Adventure
The story begins during Prince Pompadore's eighteenth birthday party in the kingdom of Pumperdink. Suddenly, his birthday cake explodes! Inside, they find three magical items: a magic scroll, a magic mirror, and a doorknob.
The scroll holds a serious warning. It says that if Prince Pompadore doesn't marry a "proper princess" within seven days, his entire kingdom will vanish! The prince, along with the kingdom's very wise elephant, Kabumpo, quickly decide what to do. They set off on a grand adventure to the Emerald City. Kabumpo believes that Princess Ozma is the only "proper princess" worthy of his beloved prince.
Trouble with the Nome King
Meanwhile, the tricky Gnome King, Ruggedo, is causing trouble. He finds a special item called Glegg's Box of Mixed Magic. He finds it while digging tunnels under the Emerald City. Ruggedo uses the magic to bring a wooden doll named Peg Amy to life. He also makes Wag the rabbit grow to the size of a man!
Then, Ruggedo uses the magic on himself. He turns into a giant! This causes a big problem: Princess Ozma's palace gets stuck right on top of his head. Panicked, Ruggedo runs off to the Land of Ev with the palace still on his head.
Journey to Find Ozma
Prince Pompadore and Kabumpo have many adventures on their way to the Emerald City. They visit strange places like Rith Metic, the Illumi Nation, and the Soup Sea. When they finally arrive in the Emerald City, they discover that Princess Ozma is missing!
Determined to find her, the prince and Kabumpo set out again. They soon meet up with Wag, the giant rabbit, and Peg Amy, the lively wooden doll. The group travels together and eventually reaches the edge of the Deadly Desert.
The Runaway Country and a Surprise Princess
At the desert's edge, something amazing happens. They are "hijacked" by the Runaway Country! This is a piece of land that is alive, can talk, and can move. The Runaway Country carries them safely over the dangerous desert and into the Land of Ev.
Finally, a big secret about Peg Amy is revealed. She is actually the princess of Sun Top Mountain! An evil magician named J. Glegg had turned her into a tree because she refused to marry him. Later, Cap'n Bill took part of that tree and carved it into the wooden doll that became Peg Amy. With her true identity known, Prince Pompadore and Peg Amy fall in love and get married, saving his kingdom!
