Kadambini Bose Ganguly (born July 18, 1861 – died October 3, 1923) was a very important Indian woman. She was one of the first Indian female doctors to practice modern medicine. She was also the first Indian woman to study at Calcutta Medical College in 1884. Later, she studied more in Scotland. After that, she came back to India and became a very successful doctor. She was also the first woman to speak at the Indian National Congress, a big political group.
Early Life and Education
Kadambini Ganguly was born on July 18, 1861, in Bhagalpur, which was part of British India. Her family was from a place called Chandsi. Her father, Braja Kishore Basu, was a school headmaster and a social reformer. He worked to help women gain more freedom and education. In 1863, he even started the first women's group in India, called the Bhagalpur Mahila Samiti.
Kadambini's family was from an upper-class Bengali community. At that time, many people in this community did not support girls going to school. But Kadambini still got an English education. She went to different schools, including the Brahmo Eden Female School and Hindu Mahila Vidyalaya.
Breaking Barriers in Education
In 1878, Kadambini's school joined with Bethune School. She then became the first woman ever to pass the entrance exam for the University of Calcutta. This was a huge step!
Because of her hard work, Bethune College started offering higher-level courses. In 1883, Kadambini and another woman named Chandramukhi Basu made history. They became the first female graduates from Bethune College. They were also the first women in the entire country to earn a university degree.
Personal Life
Kadambini Ganguly married Dwarakanath Ganguly on June 12, 1883. This was just 11 days before she started studying at Calcutta Medical College. She had eight children, so she also spent a lot of time taking care of her family and home. She was also very good at needlework.
Her relationship with her husband, Dwarakanath Ganguly, was special. It was based on love, understanding, and intelligence. People saw Kadambini as a very strong and independent woman. She was able to achieve her dreams despite the challenges of her time.
Kadambini Ganguly passed away on October 3, 1923. She had even performed a medical operation on the very same day she died.
