How Kalamazoo Got Its Name
People who have lived in the area for a long time say that Kalamazoo was named because many people moved there from Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was like a little piece of Michigan in Florida!
Celery Farming Connection
The name might also be linked to celery farming. The city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was very famous for growing celery in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
In 1908, a company was started with a lot of money ($25,000) to create a celery farm in Kalamazoo, Florida. This farm was planned to be huge, covering 10,000 acres. This idea came after celery farming had been very successful in nearby Sanford, Florida. The president of this new company was C. F. Walker, from Savannah, Georgia.
