The museum's collection started in 1881. A local banker named Horace M. Peck gave corals, shells, and rocks to the Kalamazoo School Board. In its early years, the museum gathered items from nature. It also collected old objects and things from different cultures. Today, the museum has over 50,000 items!
The museum has a modern planetarium with 109 seats. It shows many different programs. These shows are for school groups and other visitors.
