Kaleva or Kalevi and his sons are important figures in the old stories of Finland, Karelia, and Estonia. These stories are part of their rich mythology, which means ancient tales and beliefs. While many details about Kaleva and his sons have been lost over time, they remain famous characters in these cultures.

Who Are Kaleva and His Sons?

Kaleva and his sons are often seen as powerful beings, sometimes even giants, who lived long ago. They are remembered in national epics and folk tales, showing their importance to the people who told these stories.

Kaleva in Estonian Stories

In Estonia, Kaleva is known as a great King. His sons are the main characters in Estonia's national epic, a long poem called Kalevipoeg. The name "Kalevipoeg" actually means "Sons of Kalevi." This epic tells about their adventures and brave deeds, often involving battles and the creation of the land.

Kaleva in Finnish Legends

In Finland, Kaleva and his sons are more often described as mighty giants. People believed that some natural features, like very large or unusual stones, were actually created by Kaleva's sons. These stories helped explain the world around them.

Giants and Nature's Marks

The Finnish people even named parts of the sky after Kaleva. For example, the bright star Sirius was called Kalevantähti, which means "Star of Kaleva." The three stars in the Belt of Orion were known as Kaleva's sword. This shows how important these figures were in their view of the universe.

The Departure of the Giants

Old Finnish stories tell a sad tale about Kaleva's sons. As people in the land started to become Christians, Kaleva's sons, who followed older beliefs, found themselves unwelcome. They had to leave their homes and move farther and farther away as Christian people took more land.

One story says they reached an island and refused to leave. Priests came and used their powers to curse Kaleva's sons. Eventually, the giants took a huge stone and sailed away on it, never to be seen again. However, some tales say they sometimes return at night, causing mischief like flattening crops or even parts of the forest.
