Kalif Alhassan's Football Journey
Starting in Ghana
Kalif Alhassan started his professional football journey in 2007. He joined a team called Liberty Professionals in the Ghana Premier League. This is one of the top football leagues in Ghana. He helped his team reach the semifinals of the 2009 WAFU Club Championship.
Playing in the USA
Early Success with Portland Timbers
In 2010, Kalif moved to the United States. He signed with the Portland Timbers, who were then part of the USSF Division 2 Professional League. His goal was to stay with the team when they joined Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2011. MLS is the highest level of football in the United States.
In his very first game as a starter for the Timbers, Kalif scored a goal. It was in the final moments of the game, and it helped Portland win 1–0 against the Puerto Rico Islanders.
When the Timbers joined MLS in 2011, Kalif made history. He was one of the first players in MLS to get an assist in each of his first three home games. All three of those games were wins for the Timbers!
He scored his first MLS goal in 2012. It was during the first weekend of the season against Philadelphia Union. Kalif chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to help the Timbers win 3–1. He also helped set up another goal in that game. Because of his great performance, Kalif was named Player of the Week. He was the first Timbers player ever to win this award.
Moving to Other US Teams
After playing for the Portland Timbers, Kalif joined Minnesota United in 2015. He played in 28 matches for them that year. In 2016, he moved to the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Then, in 2017, he played for the New York Cosmos. Later that year, he also played for Oklahoma City Energy in 2018.
Playing in Other Countries
Kalif's football journey took him to other parts of the world too. In August 2017, after leaving the New York Cosmos, he signed with Dila Gori in Georgia. In 2019, he moved to India. There, he played for Minerva Academy, who were champions of the I-League (India's top football league). He also played for Churchill Brothers in India.
Representing Ghana
Kalif also played for his home country, Ghana. In 2007, he was part of the Ghana U-17 national team. The next year, in 2008, he joined the Ghana U-20 national team. He was also called to a training camp for the main Ghana national team in 2008.
Personal Life
Kalif Alhassan comes from a family of footballers. His father is George Alhassan, who was also a famous Ghanaian international player. George Alhassan won the Africa Cup of Nations twice with the Ghana national team.
