Kalpana Lajmi (1954–2018) was a talented Indian filmmaker. She worked as a director, producer, and screenwriter. Kalpana Lajmi was known for making realistic, low-budget films. These types of movies are sometimes called parallel cinema in India. Many of her films focused on stories about women. She passed away in 2018 at the age of 64.
Her Life and Career
Kalpana Lajmi was the daughter of painter Lalita Lajmi and Navy Captain Gopi Lajmi. She was also the niece of famous filmmaker Guru Dutt. Kalpana Lajmi started her career in films as an assistant director. She worked with the well-known film director Shyam Benegal.
Early Work
Kalpana Lajmi began by directing documentary films. Her first documentary was D.G. Movie Pioneer in 1978. She also directed A Work Study in Tea Plucking (1979) and Along the Brahmaputra (1981).
Her first full-length feature film was Ek Pal (A Moment) in 1986. This movie starred famous actors like Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, and Farooq Sheikh. Kalpana Lajmi not only directed this film but also helped produce it. She also co-wrote the screenplay with Gulzar.
Return to Films
After Ek Pal, Kalpana Lajmi directed a television show called Lohit Kinare in 1988. She then returned to making movies in 1993 with the film Rudaali. This movie was highly praised by critics. The lead actress, Dimple Kapadia, even won a top award for her acting. Kalpana Lajmi also received many compliments for her direction.
Her next film was Darmiyaan: In Between in 1997. She directed and produced this movie herself. It featured strong performances from Kirron Kher and Tabu.
Later Films
In 2001, Kalpana Lajmi directed Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence. The Indian Government helped distribute this film. It was also very well-received by critics. For the second time, an actress won a major award for her role in one of Lajmi's films. This time it was Raveena Tandon. Many people said that Lajmi helped bring out Raveena Tandon's hidden talent.
Her film Kyon? (2003) did not get much attention. Her last movie was Chingaari in 2006. This film starred Sushmita Sen. Unfortunately, Chingaari did not do well at the box office.
