Naseeruddin Shah (born on 20 July 1950) is a famous Indian actor. He is known for his work in both serious, artistic films (called parallel cinema) and popular Bollywood movies. He has also acted in many international films.

Throughout his long career, he has won many important awards. These include three National Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards. He also won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. The Government of India has given him two high civilian honors: the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. These awards recognize his great contributions to Indian cinema.

In 1982, he married actress Ratna Pathak. She is the daughter of actress Dina Pathak. Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak have two sons together. His sister-in-law is actress Supriya Pathak, who is married to actor Pankaj Kapur.

Early Life and Education

Naseeruddin Shah was born on July 20, 1950, in Barabanki town, Uttar Pradesh. His family has a history connected to the Nawabs. One of his ancestors was Jan-Fishan Khan, an Afghan leader.

He went to school at St. Anselm's Ajmer and St Joseph's College, Nainital. He earned an arts degree from Aligarh Muslim University in 1971. Later, he studied acting at the National School of Drama in Delhi. His older brother, Lt. General Zameerud-din Shah, had a distinguished career in the Indian Army.

Acting Career

Naseeruddin Shah has acted in many different types of films. He started with a small role in the 1967 film Aman. He became well-known for his roles in artistic films like Nishant, Aakrosh, and Sparsh.

Mainstream Success

Shah became more active in mainstream Bollywood movies starting with Hum Paanch in 1980. In 1983, he starred in the very successful film Masoom. Another big hit was Karma in 1986, where he acted alongside the legendary Dilip Kumar.

He continued to star in popular films like Ijaazat (1987) and Jalwa (1988). In 1988, he worked with his wife, Ratna Pathak, in the English film The Perfect Murder. He also appeared in multi-star films such as Tridev (1989) and Vishwatma (1992). In 1994, he played the villain in Mohra, which was his 100th film.

Notable Roles and International Work

Naseeruddin Shah played Mahatma Gandhi in the 2000 film Hey Ram. He was praised for his role as a drunken coach in Iqbal. He also played a ghazal singer who was secretly a terrorist in Sarfarosh (1999). In 2008, he starred in A Wednesday, which was very popular.

He has also worked on international projects. He was in Monsoon Wedding in 2001. In 2003, he played Captain Nemo in the Hollywood movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, alongside Sean Connery. He also appeared in Maqbool (2003), an Indian version of Shakespeare's Macbeth. More recently, he acted in Waiting (2016) with Kalki Koechlin.

Shah also made his debut in Pakistani films with a small role in Khuda Ke Liye. His second Pakistani film, Zinda Bhaag, was chosen to represent Pakistan at the 86th Academy Awards.

As a Director

Shah is also a director for theatre. He has directed plays for his theatre group, Motley Productions, in cities like New Delhi and Mumbai. He has directed plays by famous writers like Ismat Chughtai.

His first movie as a director was Yun Hota To Kya Hota, released in 2006. This film featured many well-known actors, including his son Imaad Shah.

In 1977, Shah, Tom Alter, and Benjamin Gilani started a theatre group called Motley Productions. Their first play was Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, performed in 1979.

He also acted in television series. In 1988, he played the main character in Mirza Ghalib, a show about the poet Mirza Ghalib. In 1989, he played the Maratha King Shivaji in the series Bharat Ek Khoj.

Shah was also a narrator for the popular children's audiobook series Karadi Tales. He and his wife, Ratna, narrated the film Paheli (2005). In 2017, he starred in The Hungry, a film based on Shakespeare.

Naseeruddin Shah was first married to Manara Sikri, and they had a daughter named Heeba Shah. Later, in the 1970s, he met actress Ratna Pathak. They acted together in several films, including Mirch Masala. Shah and Pathak got married in 1982.

With Ratna, he has two sons, Imaad and Vivaan. Both of his sons have also become actors. The family lives in Mumbai.
