Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kalugwis, also known as Karlukwees or Qalogwis, is a very important community for the Tlowitsis Nation. The Tlowitsis are one of the many groups of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples. These Indigenous peoples have lived for a long time in the Johnstone Strait area of the South Coast of British Columbia, Canada.

Kalugwis is found on the southern side of Turnour Island. It looks out towards a waterway called Beware Passage. This community is part of a special area of land known as Karlukwees Indian Reserve No. 1, or simply Karlukwees 1. This reserve covers about 10.8 hectares of land.

A Look at Kalugwis's Past

The Ławit'sis people, who are part of the Tlowitsis Nation, moved to the Kalugwis area around the year 1850. They came from a place called Klaoitsis. Later, in 1886, the land for Karlukwees Indian Reserve No. 1 was officially set aside for them.

By 1914, the community of Kalugwis had grown to include 21 houses. This shows it was an active and important place for the people living there.

Stories and Traditions

Kalugwis is a very special place in many Kwakwaka'wakw stories and traditions. These stories help explain how the world works and how things came to be.
