Kamal Haasan is a famous Indian actor, filmmaker, and politician who mainly works in Tamil cinema. He is also a talented screenwriter, director, producer, singer, and choreographer. He started acting as a child in 1960 in the Tamil film Kalathur Kannamma, which won him a special award called the President's Gold Medal. Since then, he has starred in over 200 films in many different languages, including Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Bengali. After his early child roles, he took a break to focus on his studies. Later, he worked as an assistant choreographer and even appeared in some films without being credited for his roles.

In 1973, Kamal Haasan got his first adult role in a film by K. Balachander, who he considers his mentor. He continued to act in smaller roles in films like Sollathaan Ninaikkiren (1973) and Naan Avanillai (1974). His big break as a main actor came in 1974 with the Malayalam film Kanyakumari, for which he won a Filmfare Award. He then became very popular in Tamil cinema with Balachander's Apoorva Raagangal (1975), earning another Filmfare Award. Between 1974 and 1978, he won six Filmfare Awards, including four in a row for Best Tamil Actor. In 1981, Kamal Haasan started producing films with Raja Paarvai, where he played a blind musician. His production company, "Hasan Brothers," later became Raaj Kamal Films International.

Kamal Haasan made his debut in Bollywood (the Hindi film industry) in 1981 with Ek Duuje Ke Liye. This film was a remake of his 1978 Telugu movie Maro Charitra. His role as a school teacher in Moondram Pirai (1982) earned him top acting awards, including the National Film Award for Best Actor. He also produced many successful films under Raaj Kamal Films International, such as Vikram (1986), Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989), Thevar Magan (1992), and Hey Ram (2000). Seven of his films have been sent by India to the Academy Awards, which is more than any other Indian actor. In 2009, he celebrated 50 years in the film industry. His film Vishwaroopam (2013), which he also directed and produced, won two National Film Awards.
