Kamau Amu Patton (born in 1972) is an American artist and teacher who creates many different kinds of art. He works on his own projects and also with a group called Lone Wolf Recital Corps, started by Terry Adkins. Mr. Patton also teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at Bard College.

Early Life and Education

Kamau Amu Patton was born in 1972. He studied sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. Later, he earned a special art degree, called a MFA, from Stanford University in 2007.

Kamau Patton's Art Career

In 2008, one of his art pieces, Design and the Elastic Mind, was shown at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. This is a very famous museum!

In 2010, Mr. Patton won an award called the SECA Art Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. From 2010 to 2011, he was an artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem. This means he worked and created art there for a period of time.

In 2011, Kamau Patton designed a new version of the "T" logo for The New York Times newspaper's style magazine. His art was also part of a big festival in 2012 called the Pacific Standard Time Performance and Public Art Festival. He has also shared new sound art at the Skidmore College's Tang Teaching Museum. In 2015, he showed a collection of his art at the Callicoon Fine Arts Gallery in New York.

Mr. Patton has also performed with the Lone Wolf Recital Corps, a group that combines different art forms. He performed with Blanche Bruce in 2013 and later with Charles Gaines and Clifford Owens at MoMA in 2017. In 2017, he presented his work Amun (The Unseen Legends) at MoMA. For this, he created improvised sounds to go along with his abstract film from 2010, called Theory of Colors.

In 2019, Mr. Patton was chosen for a special program at the Storm King Art Center. In 2020, he was an artist-in-residence at the Experimental Sound Studio. Also in 2020, he received a large grant of $100,000 from Creative Capital for his project called Tel.
