Kamau Amu Patton, born in 1972, is an American artist and teacher. He creates art in many different ways, often combining sound, film, and visual art. He also works with a group called the Lone Wolf Recital Corps, which was started by artist Terry Adkins. Besides making art, Patton teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Bard College.

Early Life and Education

Kamau Amu Patton was born in 1972. He studied sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. Later, he earned a special art degree, called a MFA, from Stanford University in 2007.

Artistic Journey

Patton's art has been shown in many important places. In 2008, his work Design and the Elastic Mind was part of an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.

In 2010, he won the SECA Art Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This award helps new artists get noticed. From 2010 to 2011, he was an artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem. This means he worked there for a while, focusing on his art.

In 2011, Patton even redesigned the famous "T" logo for The New York Times newspaper. His work was also featured in a big art event called the Pacific Standard Time Performance and Public Art Festival in 2012. He has also shared his sound art at the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College. In 2015, he showed new artworks at the Callicoon Fine Arts Gallery in New York.

Patton has performed with the Lone Wolf Recital Corps, a group that combines different art forms. He performed with Blanche Bruce in 2013 and later with Charles Gaines and Clifford Owens at MoMA in 2017. Also in 2017, he presented his work Amun (The Unseen Legends) at MoMA. For this, he created live sound to go along with his abstract film from 2010, called Theory of Colors.

In 2019, Patton was chosen for a special program at the Storm King Art Center. In 2020, he was an artist-in-residence at the Experimental Sound Studio. That same year, he received a large grant of $100,000 from Creative Capital for his art project called Tel.
