History of the Name

The name "Kanaka Bar" comes from a special spot on the Fraser River. This spot had lots of gold. Long ago, during the gold rush, workers from Hawaii came to mine for gold there. These Hawaiian workers were sometimes called "Kanakas." That's how the place got its name.

Lands of the Kanaka Bar Band

The Kanaka Bar Indian Band governs two special areas of land. These are called Kanaka Bar Indian Reserve No. 1A and Kanaka Bar Indian Reserve No. 2. These reserves are important lands for the band members.

Nature Around Kanaka Bar

The area around Kanaka Bar is part of a special natural zone. It is called the Interior Douglas-Fir (IDF) Biogeoclimatic Zone. This means the forests here are mostly made up of Douglas-Fir trees. The climate in Kanaka Bar is interesting because it changes. It can be very dry and hot in some parts. Other parts are wetter and warmer. This area is like a bridge between the dry interior of British Columbia and the wetter coast. You can see this change as you travel south in the Fraser Canyon, from Lytton towards Hope.
