Kandie Diane Smith, born on October 20, 1969, is an important leader in North Carolina. She is a member of the North Carolina Senate, representing the 5th district. Before this, she served in the North Carolina House of Representatives. She was also the temporary mayor of Greenville, North Carolina. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Education and Early Life

Kandie Smith went to Charleston Southern University. She earned a bachelor's degree there. She studied sociology and also communications.

Serving Greenville City Council

Before becoming mayor, Kandie Smith was part of the Greenville City Council. She represented District 1. When the mayor, Allen Thomas, left office, the council members chose Smith to be the temporary mayor. She served in this role until the next election in November 2017. After that election, she was voted back onto the City Council for District 1.

North Carolina House of Representatives

In 2016, Kandie Smith tried to become the Democratic candidate for North Carolina's 24th House district. She ran against the person already holding the position, Jean Farmer-Butterfield. Farmer-Butterfield won that election.

In December 2017, the person representing the 8th House district, Susan Martin, decided not to run again. Kandie Smith then announced she would run for that seat. Smith won the primary election with 50% of the votes. She ran against Mildred Council and Ernest Reeves.

Later, Smith faced businesswoman Brenda Letchworth Smith in the general election. Kandie Smith won this election with 64.6% of the votes. She officially started her term on January 1, 2019.
