Kanem (Arabic: كانم) is an important region located in the country of Chad, in central Africa. It used to be called a "prefecture" but since 2002, Chad changed how it divides its land, and now Kanem is known as a "region."

The capital city of the Kanem Region is Mao. This region is known for its unique landscapes, including beautiful oases.

About Kanem Region

Kanem is one of the 23 regions that make up the country of Chad. It is located in the western part of Chad. The region is named after the ancient Kanem Empire, which was a powerful kingdom in this area many centuries ago.

Location and Geography

The Kanem Region is found in the Sahel belt, which is a dry area south of the Sahara Desert. This means it has a hot and dry climate. Despite the dry conditions, you can find green oases, especially around its capital, Mao. These oases are like islands of water and plants in the desert, making life possible.

People and Population

According to a 2009 count, about 354,603 people live in the Kanem Region. The people living here come from different ethnic groups, and they have rich cultural traditions. Many people in Kanem work in farming and raising animals.

Government and Administration

The Kanem Region is led by a Governor. In 2008, the Governor was Ngamai Djari. The region is further divided into smaller parts to help manage it better.

  • It has 3 main areas called "departments."
  • These departments are then split into 10 smaller "sub-prefectures."

This system helps the local government serve the people and manage resources across the region.

History of Kanem

The area where Kanem Region is today has a long and fascinating history. It was once the heart of the powerful Kanem Empire, which existed for over a thousand years, from around the 8th century to the late 19th century. This empire was very important for trade and culture in central Africa.

The Kanem Empire controlled trade routes across the Sahara Desert. They traded goods like salt, gold, and slaves. The empire was also a center for Islamic learning and scholarship. Even though the empire no longer exists, its legacy is still a big part of the region's identity.
