Early Life and Education
Kara Janx was born Kara Jankelowitz in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 17 September 1975. She grew up in an Ashkenazi Jewish family. Kara studied hard and earned a degree in architecture.
Becoming a Fashion Designer
After finishing her architecture degree, Kara Janx moved to New York City. There, she decided to follow her passion for fashion. She became a fashion designer and launched her very first clothing collection in 2002.
In 2009, Kara won a special award. She was named the International Sportswear Designer of the Year. Later, in 2011, she started a successful line of wedding dresses.
Competing on Project Runway
Kara Janx was a contestant on Project Runway, a popular TV show where designers compete. She stayed on the show for eleven episodes. This means she made it quite far in the competition!
During her time on the show, she faced some tough challenges. In one episode, called the "Inspiration challenge," she was among the bottom two designers. In another, the "On Thin Ice challenge," she was in the bottom three.
Kara was one of the last four contestants left. She just missed out on being in the final three designers who got to show their collections at Olympus Fashion Week in New York City. However, Kara still got to show her collection at Fashion Week. This was done as a "decoy" so that viewers wouldn't know who the actual top three were until her final episode aired.
Kara Janx also returned to the show for the first season of Project Runway All-Stars. She was eliminated in the seventh episode of that season.
Kara's Work After Project Runway
Since her time on Project Runway, Kara Janx has continued to design clothes under her own brand. She also worked as a design director for another fashion company called Elie Tahari.
In 2015, Kara launched a new clothing line called Tenby. She is especially famous for her unique kimono wrap dresses. She even wore one of her own designs on her original season of Project Runway.
