Kara Shepherd (born February 18, 1911 – died October 1984) was an amazing African-American artist. She was known for her unique style called surrealist painting. This means her art often looked like dreams or imagination.

Who Was Kara Shepherd?

Kara Shepherd was born on February 18, 1911. Her family lived on a farm in a town called Culpeper, in Virginia. Even when she was very young, Kara loved art. Her parents saw her talent and encouraged her to follow her passion.

Her Journey in Art Education

Kara Shepherd studied art at many different schools. She started her art education in 1926 at the Philadelphia School of Art. Later, in 1950, she attended the Art Students League of New York. She also studied at Fordham University in 1960.

She even traveled to France to study art! From 1962 to 1964, she learned at the École des Beaux-Arts in Fontainebleau. Later in her life, from 1979 to 1980, she continued her studies at Arizona State University.
