Kardam, Prince of Tarnovo, was the oldest son of Simeon II of Bulgaria, who was once the Tsar of Bulgaria, and his wife, Margarita Gómez-Acebo y Cejuela. Kardam was born in 1962, after Bulgaria had stopped having a king. Even though he wasn't a crown prince in a ruling kingdom, he was still known as the Prince of Tarnovo. This was a special title for the person next in line to the Bulgarian throne. He was also called Kardam of Bulgaria.
Life and Education
Kardam was born in Madrid, Spain. He was baptized into the Eastern Orthodox faith. He went to Penn State University and earned a master's degree in agricultural economics.
Family Life
On July 11, 1996, Kardam married Miriam Ungría y López in Madrid. Miriam was born in Madrid in 1963 and is a gemologist. Her parents were Bernardo Ungría y Goiburu and María del Carmen López y Oleaga.
Kardam and Miriam had two sons:
- Boris (born October 12, 1997, in Madrid)
- Beltrán (born March 23, 1999, in Madrid)
These two sons are first and second in line to the former Bulgarian throne. Kardam was also the godfather of Prince Achileas-Andreas of Greece and Denmark.
Car Accident and Recovery
On August 15, 2008, Kardam and his wife were in a serious car accident. It happened in El Molar, a town near Madrid. Kardam was taken by helicopter to a hospital, and his wife went to another hospital. Their car hit a tree and then flipped over.
Kardam had very serious head injuries and also hurt his hands badly. His wife had a broken elbow, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung. She was treated and left the hospital a few weeks later. Doctors kept Kardam in an induced coma because of his severe injuries. He had surgery and was recovering for a long time. In January 2009, he was able to go home and was getting better. However, about a year later, his health got worse, and he had to go back to the hospital. He remained in a coma until he passed away.
Death
Prince Kardam died on April 7, 2015, at a hospital in Madrid. He was 52 years old and passed away from a lung infection. After an Eastern Orthodox funeral service, he was buried at Saint Isidore Cemetery in Madrid.
Honours
Kardam received several honours from the former Bulgarian royal family:
- Knight Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius
- Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Alexander
