Karel Svoboda (born 19 December 1938 – died 28 January 2007) was a famous Czech composer. He wrote many popular songs and music for TV shows. You might have heard his tunes without even knowing it!

Who Was Karel Svoboda?

Karel Svoboda was born in Prague, which was then part of Czechoslovakia. Today, Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic. He started his career as a composer of pop music. Before that, he even studied medicine for a while!

Early Music Career

In the 1950s, Karel Svoboda was part of a rock band called "Mefisto." This was how he first got involved in music. Later, he started writing music for the Laterna Magica theatre in Prague. He also wrote many songs for different Czech singers.

One of his most famous songs was Lady Carneval. He wrote this song in 1969 for Karel Gott, who was a very big pop star in the Czech Republic. Karel Svoboda wrote a huge number of songs for Karel Gott, about 80 in total!

Music for TV Shows

Karel Svoboda is especially known for his music for TV shows. He wrote music for the German TV channel ZDF for more than 30 years! Many children and teenagers in Europe grew up listening to his music.
