Karetu (also known as Kāretu) is a small community located in the beautiful Northland Region of New Zealand's North Island. It's nestled between the towns of Kawakawa to the west and Waikare to the northeast.
The Karetu River flows through the area from the Russell Forest. This river eventually joins the Kawakawa River before flowing into the famous Bay of Islands.
The name Karetu comes from a Māori word. It refers to Hierochloe redolens, which is a type of sweet-smelling grass. This special grass was traditionally used to make fragrant sachets and woven girdles.
Kāretu is also home to Kāretu Marae and the Ngāti Manu meeting house. These are important places for the Ngāpuhi hapū (sub-tribes) of Ngāti Manu and Te Uri Karaka. Another traditional meeting spot for Ngāti Manu in the area is called Pākaru-ki te Rangi.
