Kari Traa (born January 28, 1974) is a former Olympic freestyle skier from Norway. She is famous for her success in the moguls event. Kari won a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics, a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics, and a bronze medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics.
Skiing Achievements
Kari Traa is a four-time World Champion in freestyle skiing. She won gold medals in 2001 for both moguls and parallel moguls. She repeated this success in 2003, winning gold in both moguls and parallel moguls again. She also earned three silver medals at the World Championships. These were for moguls and parallel moguls in 1999, and for dual moguls in 2005. Overall, Kari has achieved 37 victories in the World Cup competitions.
Olympic Journey
Kari Traa first competed in the Olympics in 1992 at Albertville. This was the first time moguls was an official Olympic event. She finished 14th, just missing out on the final round. In 1994, the Olympic Games were held in Norway, her home country, in Lillehammer. However, Kari could not compete because she injured her knee during a training run just three weeks before the event. After the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Kari finally won her first Olympic medal, a bronze. She continued her success, winning a gold medal in 2002 and a silver medal in 2006.
Life After Skiing
After her career as a professional skier, Kari Traa started her own company in 2002. This company sells sports clothes, and her collections have won awards for their success. In 2006, she released her autobiography, a book about her life, called Kari.
Kari Traa is also involved in helping young skiers. She works to find and encourage new ski talents. She has also helped organize World Cup events. She is very active in the Ekstremsportveko (Extreme Sports Week) festival. This festival is held in her hometown of Voss, Norway, and is known as one of the biggest extreme sports festivals in the world. In 2006, she received the Nynorsk User of the Year award, which recognizes people who promote the Nynorsk language in Norway.
