Karine Chemla was born on February 8, 1957. She is a French expert who studies the history of mathematics. She also specializes in Chinese studies. She works as a research director at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in France. She is also a senior researcher at the New York University Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. In 2019, she became a member of the American Philosophical Society, which is a very respected group.

Karine Chemla's Education

Karine Chemla studied at several universities in Paris, France. She attended Paris Diderot University and the École normale supérieure de jeunes filles. In 1978, she earned a high-level teaching degree in mathematics. The next year, she received a special diploma for advanced studies.

From Pure Math to History

At first, Karine Chemla focused on pure mathematics. This is math that explores ideas for their own sake. However, in 1980, her interests changed.
