Karl Ravech grew up in Needham, Massachusetts. He is from a Jewish family. He went to Ithaca College and earned a bachelor's degree in communications in 1987. Later, he continued his studies at Binghamton University. There, he received a master's degree in management and leadership in 1990.

Starting Out in Local News
Before joining ESPN, Karl Ravech worked at local TV stations. From 1987 to 1990, he was a sports anchor and reporter at WBNG-TV in Binghamton, New York. After that, he moved to WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He worked there from 1990 to 1993, doing a similar job.
