Karna Maria Birmingham (born December 3, 1900 – died July 5, 1987) was an Australian artist and illustrator. She was also a talented print maker. Karna Birmingham became well known for drawing pictures in many children's books.

Early Life and Art Training

Karna Birmingham was born in a place called Mosman, which is a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Her father was a doctor from Ireland.

She went to school at Loreto, Kirribilli. After finishing school, Karna decided to study art. From 1914 to 1920, she attended the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney. This school helped her develop her artistic skills.

In 1938, Karna Birmingham got an eye disease called trachoma. This condition affected her eyesight. It made it harder for her to see clearly and limited her art career.

Later in her life, Karna lived in Turramurra, another Sydney suburb. Before she passed away, she moved to a nursing home in Neutral Bay. She died in 1987.

Her Artistic Works

Even when she was still at art school, Karna Birmingham was recognized for her talent. People especially praised her pen and ink drawings. She was seen as a very promising student.

Karna Birmingham showed her artwork in public exhibitions. In 1921, she displayed her work at the Anthony Hordern Fine Art Gallery. She exhibited alongside other important women artists of her time. She also showed her linocuts, which are a type of print, at many different exhibitions.

In 1934, Karna Birmingham wrote her own children's book. It was a book of poems called Skippety Songs, and she drew all the pictures for it herself. She also created illustrations for many other children's books.

Today, some of her artwork is kept in important collections. You can find her work at the National Gallery.
