Kassel is one of the three special administrative regions, called Regierungsbezirke, in the German state of Hesse. It is located in the northern part of Germany. This region was created in 1866 when the area became part of a new province called Hesse-Nassau. Today, the Kassel region includes 138 different towns and villages, known as municipalities.
