Kassel is a special kind of area in Germany called a Landkreis, which means 'rural district'. It's located in the northern part of Hesse, one of Germany's states. The big city of Kassel is almost completely surrounded by this district, but it's a separate city on its own.

How Kassel District Was Formed
The Kassel district you see today was created in 1972. Before that, there were three smaller districts: Kassel, Hofgeismar, and Wolfhagen. These three areas were joined together to form the new, larger Kassel district.
Understanding the Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for the Kassel district tells a story about its history.
Symbols on the Shield
- The top part of the shield shows a lion. This lion is a symbol of Hesse, the state where Kassel is located. Kassel used to be the capital of the county of Hesse until 1866. In that year, it became part of Prussia.
- The bottom part of the shield has three oak leaves. These leaves were taken from the old coat of arms of the Hofgeismar district.
- You can also see a wolf's hook in the lower part. This symbol represents the Wolfhagen district, which was another area that joined to form the current Kassel district.
