Katarína Tóthová (born February 6, 1940, in Bratislava) is a well-known Slovak politician. She served as a Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia. She was also the first Minister of Justice for Slovakia. For many years, she was a Member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic. She represented the People's Party – Movement for a Democratic Slovakia.
Early Life and Education
Katarína Tóthová was born in Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. She went to high school with the famous actor Milan Lasica. After high school, she studied law at the Comenius University in Bratislava. She graduated in 1962.
After finishing her studies, she became a Law Professor at the same university. She taught law there for many years. In 1989, she was offered a job as Justice Minister. She didn't take the job then. She worried it might affect her work as a professor. In 1992, she was offered the government job again. This time, she accepted the offer.
Political Career
In the 1990s, Katarína Tóthová held important roles in the Slovak government. She was the Minister of Justice from 1993 to 1994. Later, she served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1994 to 1998. She worked in two governments led by Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar.
Tóthová was a key member of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS). This was the ruling party at the time. She was a strong supporter of the government's policies.
After the HZDS party lost the 1998 Slovak parliamentary election, Tóthová became a Member of Parliament (MP). This meant she helped make laws in the National Council. She was not elected in the next election in 2002. However, she returned to parliament later. She took the place of other MPs who left. She was elected again in the 2006 Slovak parliamentary election. After the 2010 Slovak parliamentary election, her party lost all its seats. At that point, she decided to retire from politics.
Personal Life
Katarína Tóthová was married to Ľudovít Tóth. He was also a professor, teaching at the University of Economics in Bratislava. They were married for almost 50 years. Sadly, Ľudovít Tóth passed away in 2011.
They had one daughter together. Katarína Tóthová also has a granddaughter. Her granddaughter is married to Vladimír Weiss. He is a well-known football player for ŠK Slovan Bratislava.
