About Kate Armstrong
Kate Armstrong is from Canada and works as an artist, writer, and curator. She studied at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Later, she earned a master's degree from Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. After finishing her studies, she started her career in the arts. Her main goal is to explore how art and technology work together.
Kate was born in Calgary, Canada. She has lived in many different places, including New York, Glasgow, and Japan. Now, she lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is married to Michael Tippett and they have two children.
Kate's Career
In 2003, Kate started a group called Upgrade Vancouver. Through this group, she has organized over 100 events in Vancouver that focus on art and technology. She has also helped with many international events. These events are part of Upgrade International, a big network that works in 30 cities around the world.
In 2008, Kate asked artist J.R. Carpenter to create a special project called "Tributaries and Text-Fed Streams." This project looked at how online news feeds, called RSS feeds, could be used to create new kinds of stories.
From 2005 to 2008, Kate taught at Simon Fraser University. She worked in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology in Surrey, British Columbia. In 2009, she also gave a lecture at the famous Tate Britain art museum in London.
Cool Projects by Kate
Kate Armstrong has worked on many interesting projects that combine art, technology, and writing. Here are some of them:
- Medium (2011) – This was a book that shared the results of an online project with the same name. It explored how people interact with the internet.
- Path (2008) – This project was a 12-volume book. The text in the book was created based on the real-life movements of a person in Montreal. A new version of the book was released in 2012.
- Grafik Dynamo (2005–2008) – This was an online artwork that took images from the internet. It then turned them into live-action comic strips! This project was created for Turbulence.org. It was also written about in magazines like Digital Humanities Quarterly and Leonardo.
- PING (2003) – This project was a special telephone system. When you called it, it would guide you through different parts of a city. It was like an interactive tour over the phone. This project was mentioned in the book Beyond the Screen in 2010.
