Kate Gosselin (born Katie Irene Kreider on March 28, 1975) is an American television personality. Many people know her from the reality TV show Jon & Kate Plus 8. This show followed her and her then-husband, Jon Gosselin, as they raised their eight children: a set of twins and a set of sextuplets (six babies born at the same time!).

Early Life and Learning
Kate Gosselin was born as Katie Irene Kreider in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Her birthday is March 28, 1975. Her dad was a pastor. Kate has German, Scottish, and English family roots. She grew up with three sisters and one brother. Later, she went to nursing school at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center and became a registered nurse.
Becoming a Mom and TV Star
Starting a Family
Before she was on TV, Kate worked as a nurse who helped deliver babies. She met Jon Gosselin in 1997, and they got married in 1999. Kate had a health condition that made it hard for her to have babies naturally. So, she and Jon used special medical help called fertility treatment.
In 2000, Kate gave birth to twin girls, Cara and Mady. They were born a bit early. After more medical help, Kate became pregnant again. On May 10, 2004, she had sextuplets! That means six babies were born at the same time: three boys (Aaden, Collin, and Joel) and three girls (Alexis, Hannah, and Leah). The sextuplets were also born early, about 10 weeks before their due date. Because they were so small, they needed machines to help them breathe for a while.
Life on Reality TV
After the sextuplets were born, the Gosselin family's life became very interesting to many people. First, they were on an NBC show called Home Delivery. This show helped them make their house bigger for their large family.
Then, they had a special on the Discovery Health channel in 2005 called Surviving Sextuplets and Twins. A year later, another special aired, Sextuplets and Twins: One Year Later. These shows were very popular!
Jon & Kate Plus 8
Because so many people watched the specials, Discovery Health gave the family their own reality TV series. It was called Jon & Kate Plus 8 and started in April 2007. The show filmed the family for three or four days a week, showing what their daily life was like. It first aired on Discovery Health and then moved to The Learning Channel (TLC). The family was paid for being on the show.
Kate Plus 8
After Kate and Jon decided to live separately, the show's name changed to Kate Plus 8 in September 2009. It focused on Kate raising the children as a single mom. Jon was not on the show as much. Later, the show was stopped for a while. However, Kate Plus 8 came back for more seasons. Reruns (old episodes) of the show are still shown on TLC.
Other TV Shows
Kate has been on other TV shows too:
- In 2009, she filmed a test episode for a talk show with Paula Deen, but the show didn't get picked up.
- In 2010, she was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. She danced with Tony Dovolani but was voted off in the fifth week.
- She co-hosted the talk show The View a few times.
- In 2013, Kate and her kids were on an episode of Celebrity Wife Swap. She swapped lives with another celebrity, Kendra Wilkinson.
- Kate Plus 8 had reunion specials and new seasons between 2014 and 2017. During the filming of one season, there were disagreements about two of the children, Collin and Hannah. Because Jon decided not to film, most of that season was not shown.
- In 2019, Kate had a new dating show on TLC called Kate Plus Date.
- In 2023, she was on a tough reality show called Special Forces: World's Toughest Test. She had to leave early in the first episode because she got hurt.
Kate as an Author
Kate Gosselin has also written books about her life and family.
- Her first book, Multiple Blessings, came out in 2008. It was co-written with Jon Gosselin and Beth Carson. It became a bestseller, meaning many people bought it.
- Her second book, Eight Little Faces, was released in 2009 and was also a bestseller.
- In 2010, she published her third book, I Just Want You To Know. This book also sold well.
Working as a Nurse
When Jon & Kate Plus 8 first started, Kate was working as a labor and delivery nurse in Pennsylvania. This means she helped mothers give birth to their babies. In 2021, she got her nursing license to work in North Carolina.
Changes in the Family
On June 22, 2009, Jon and Kate announced on their TV show that they were separating. This means they decided to live apart. Later that year, in December 2009, their divorce was finalized. A divorce is when a married couple legally ends their marriage.
After the divorce, Kate was given ownership of the family home. She also had primary custody of the children. This meant the children lived with her most of the time. Jon and Kate had different ideas about raising their children. These differences sometimes led to disagreements that were reported in the news.
Living Arrangements for the Children
Over time, there were some changes to where the children lived.
- In 2016, Kate shared that their son Collin was enrolled in a special program to help him with his needs.
- Later, there were disagreements between Kate and Jon about some of their children.
- In 2018, their daughter Hannah began living with Jon. A judge agreed that Jon would have custody of Hannah.
- Also in 2018, Jon was given sole custody of Collin. This means Collin also went to live with his dad after he finished his program.
Kate and Jon mostly communicate through their lawyers now. According to Jon, Hannah and Collin do not have much contact with their mother.
Kate's Life Today
In March 2021, Kate Gosselin moved to Troutman, North Carolina. Four of her children – Alexis, Aaden, Leah, and Joel – moved with her. The twin girls, Cara and Mady, started college in New York around 2019. Cara went to Fordham University, and Mady went to Syracuse University. When they were home from college, they lived with Kate. Meanwhile, Hannah and Collin continued to live with their father, Jon, in Pennsylvania. In 2023, Collin joined the U.S. Marine Corps. After moving to North Carolina, Kate got her nursing license for that state in June 2021.
