Kate Stone is an amazing English engineer. She is the founder and CEO of a company called Novalia. Her company creates cool products using "Interactive Printed Media." This means they make paper and other printed things that you can touch and interact with, almost like a screen!
Education and Early Life
Kate Stone was born in Cheshire, England, United Kingdom. She studied electronics at the University of Salford. Later, she earned a PhD in physics from the University of Cambridge. She did her research at the famous Cavendish Laboratory.
Innovations in Interactive Print
Kate Stone started her company, Novalia, in 2006. Her team figured out how to use regular printing presses to make electronics. They use special inks that react to touch. This allows them to print circuits directly onto paper or other materials.
These special products are called "Interactive Printed Media" (IPM). Imagine a poster that plays music when you touch it! Novalia has worked on exciting projects for big companies. These include advertising campaigns for Bud Light, The Hershey Company, IKEA, Pizza Hut, and McDonald's.
Sharing Her Ideas
Kate Stone loves to share her vision of interactive print with the world. She has spoken at many big events and conferences. One famous talk was at TED2013, where she showed "DJ decks made of...paper." This showed how simple paper could be turned into something interactive and fun.
Her work on interactive electronics was even shown in a TV show on Sky Arts. She also helped out with NASA's Space Apps Data Bootcamp in 2016. This event brings people together to solve challenges using data and technology.
