Ethel Kate Westrup (1885–1928) was a talented British artist. She was known for both her paintings and the beautiful pottery she created.
About Ethel Kate Westrup
Ethel Kate Westrup was born and grew up in Hornsey, a part of north London. She came from a large family with at least eight children.
We don't have records of Ethel going to a special art school. But we do know that around 1911, she moved to Lamorna in Cornwall. She moved with her sister, Emily, who was also an artist.
Her Art and Exhibitions
Kate Westrup mostly created oil paintings and drawings. She loved to paint animals, which were often the main subject of her artwork.
Her art was shown in important places like the Royal Academy in London. This is a very famous place where artists show their best work. She also exhibited with the New English Art Club. In 1912, she showed chalk drawings of dogs at the Alpine Club.
Ethel also drew pictures for books. For example, she contributed illustrations to the Punch Book of Hunting in 1914. In 1923, she became an associate member of the Society of Women Artists. This meant she was recognized as an important artist by other women artists.
Starting a Pottery Business
In the early 1920s, Ethel Kate Westrup started a business called the Lamorna Pottery. She started it with another artist named Ella Naper.
The Lamorna Pottery made many different types of ceramics, which are items made from clay and then baked. They made things like bowls, plates, and other items for homes. These items were sold in art galleries in Cornwall and in big cities like Manchester and Liverpool. The pottery business closed down after Ethel Westrup passed away in 1928.
