Kathleen Ankers (born October 22, 1919 – died October 24, 2001) was an American scenic designer. A scenic designer is someone who creates the look of the sets for plays, TV shows, or movies. Kathleen was famous for her work on popular TV shows like The Rosie O'Donnell Show and the Late Show with David Letterman.
Kathleen Ankers' Early Life
Kathleen Ankers was born in a place called Ealing, which is in London, England. In the late 1940s, she moved to the United States.
She sometimes designed costumes for plays on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City. For example, she worked on Fancy Meeting You Again in 1952 and My Sister, My Sister in 1974. She also designed sets for a play called Mr. Pickwick in 1952. However, most of her career was spent working in television.
Working in Television
Kathleen Ankers worked on many well-known television shows. She helped create the sets for programs like Late Night with David Letterman and Late Show with David Letterman. She also worked on ESPN's SportsCenter, the original Sale of the Century, and The Rosie O'Donnell Show. Other shows she worked on include He Said, She Said and The $128,000 Question.
On Late Night and Late Show with David Letterman, she even appeared on screen! She played funny characters like the "NBC Bookmobile Lady" and "Peggy, the Foul-Mouthed Chambermaid."
Kathleen won several important awards for her amazing work. She received two Daytime Emmy Awards for her designs on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. She won one in 2000 and another one after she passed away in 2002. She also won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1995 for her work on Late Show With David Letterman.
