About Kathy Butterly's Art
Kathy Butterly creates ceramic sculptures that have many layers of colorful glaze. She often displays her art on special stands. A famous art critic, Peter Schjeldahl, once called her "the most exciting master of clay today."
How She Makes Her Sculptures
Kathy's art is sometimes compared to another artist, George Ohr. This is because both artists like to make sculptures with crumpled shapes and twisted openings. Kathy takes traditional ceramic shapes and twists them. She then adds many layers of glaze, sometimes making the art look bigger. She bakes her art in a kiln many times.
Kathy is very well known for creating her own special glazes and using amazing colors. She uses different materials to make her art look unique. Some parts might be shiny and see-through, while others look like bright puddles of neon color. She prefers to make smaller, detailed artworks that show different feelings.
