Kathy Butterly facts for kids
Kathy Butterly is an American artist who makes amazing sculptures out of clay. She was born in Amityville, New York, in 1963. Today, she lives and works in New York City.
Kathy studied art at two different colleges. She earned her first degree from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1986. Later, she received her master's degree from the University of California, Davis in 1990.
Her Unique Art Style
Kathy Butterly creates unique sculptures using many layers of glaze. She often places her finished artworks on special stands or pedestals. A famous art critic, Peter Schjeldahl, even called her "today’s liveliest master of clay"!
Her work is sometimes compared to another artist, George Ohr. This is because she also likes to create crumpled shapes and twisted openings in her clay. Kathy often takes traditional clay forms and twists them. She then adds many layers of shiny glaze. Sometimes, she even makes parts of the sculpture thicker with glaze. She bakes her sculptures in a hot oven many times.
Kathy is very famous for how she uses glazes and colors. She uses different materials to make her sculptures look clear and shiny. Some pieces even look like bright puddles of neon color. She prefers to make smaller, detailed sculptures. These artworks often show different feelings or ideas.
Exhibitions and Collections
Kathy Butterly's art has been shown in many important exhibitions. Some of her major solo shows include ColorForm (2019) and Thought Presence (2018). She also had shows like The Weight of Color (2015) and Enter (2014). Her work was even part of the 54th Carnegie International, a big art event.
Her sculptures are held in important art collections. In 2018, some of her work became part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This was thanks to a special gift of modern ceramic art. Kathy is represented by the James Cohan Gallery in New York. She is also represented by the Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica.
