Katie's Art and Ideas

What Inspires Her Art

Katie Holten's art often uses recycled materials. She also uses maps, plants, and ideas about nature. Her art helps people talk about important topics. These topics include protecting different kinds of plants and animals (called biodiversity). She also explores changes in the Earth's climate (known as global warming).

Drawing and Creativity

Drawing is a very important part of Katie's art. She loves to turn flat drawings into 3D artworks. She believes drawing can be many things. It can be lines on paper, in space, or even on a screen. She thinks drawing is a way to show what is real, what might be real, or what could be real. For example, in her work "Uprooted," even the shadows on the walls are part of the art.

Public Art Projects

In 2007, Katie Holten created a special public artwork. It was called "Tree Museum." This project celebrated the 100th birthday of the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, New York. She marked 100 trees along the four-and-a-half-mile-long street. Each tree had a sign with a phone number and a code. People could call the number and listen to short stories. These stories were from people talking about their lives in the Bronx.
