Katie Leclerc is an American actress and producer. She is best known for her starring role as Daphne Vasquez in the popular TV show Switched at Birth. She has also acted in other television series like Veronica Mars, Community, and The Big Bang Theory.

Early Life and Family
Katie Leclerc was born in San Antonio, Texas, and she grew up in Lakewood, Colorado. She is the youngest of three children in her family.
At age 17, Katie began learning American Sign Language (ASL). Later, she was diagnosed with Ménière's disease, a condition that can cause hearing loss and dizziness. Her father and older sister also have Ménière's disease, and her sister is an ASL teacher.
On September 6, 2014, Leclerc married Brian Habecost. They divorced in 2017.
Acting Career
Leclerc's love for acting began in seventh grade when she played the main character in a school play of the musical Annie. To follow her dream, she moved to San Diego and studied theater in high school. Before her big break, she appeared in commercials for major companies like Pepsi and Comcast.
Her most famous role came in 2011 when she was cast as Daphne Vasquez in Switched at Birth. Her character is deaf, and Katie often used a Deaf accent for the role. She spoke about this choice:
"My agent submitted me for a nationwide casting call for the roles of Emmett and Daphne. I ended up getting a callback, and that's when I was asked to try a 'deaf accent.' It's something we discussed in depth. We wanted to make sure my portrayal was respectful and done correctly."
