Katja Kessin's Journey
Early Life and Moving to Canada
Katja Kessin was born in Hamburg, Germany, on February 7, 1959. When she was around 21 years old, in 1980, she moved to Montreal, Canada. This big move marked the start of her life in a new country.
Becoming an Artist and Teacher
Katja loved art and decided to study it at Concordia University in Montreal. She worked very hard and earned a special degree called a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in painting in 1993. This degree showed she was a highly skilled painter. Later, in 2003, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Humanities, which means she studied many different subjects about human culture.
After her studies, Katja shared her knowledge with others. She taught art at Concordia University, even helping people who weren't art students learn to be creative. She also created a special art program for women and children at a women's shelter in Montreal. This shows how much she cared about using art to help people.
Awards and Recognition
In 2000, Katja's dedication and hard work were recognized. She received a national award of merit from the Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada. This award celebrated her important contributions as a woman in academics.
Her Legacy in Art
Sadly, Katja Kessin passed away on April 1, 2006, in Montreal. However, her art continues to inspire. In 2007, a special show of her work was held at the FOFA Gallery at Concordia University. This type of show, called a retrospective, looks back at all the amazing art an artist created over their lifetime.
You can also find her artwork in important places. Some of her paintings are part of the collection at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, a famous art museum in Quebec.
