Katrin Amunts is a German neuroscientist. This means she is a scientist who studies the brain and the nervous system. She is a professor at the C. and O. Vogt Institute for Brain Research at the University of Düsseldorf. She also leads the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine in INM-1 at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Dr. Amunts is known worldwide for her work in mapping the human brain. She is also the Scientific Research Director of the Human Brain Project.

Early Life and Education

Katrin Amunts was born in Potsdam, which was in East Germany, in 1962. She went to school in the Soviet Union. There, she studied medicine and biophysics at Pirogov Medical School. In 1989, she earned her doctorate degree. This degree was in neuroscience and anatomy from the Institute of Brain Research in Moscow.

Exploring the Brain

After her studies, Dr. Amunts trained at a Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin. She then joined the C. & O. Vogt Institute for Brain Research. This institute is part of the University of Düsseldorf. She also worked as a professor at Aachen University. Later, in 2013, she returned to the University of Düsseldorf.

Dr. Amunts is one of the most important researchers in neuroscience today. Her work helps us understand how our brains work. She was even named a key player in the "10 Breakthrough Technologies 2014" list. This list was published by a science magazine called JARA-BRAIN.

The Big Brain Project

Katrin Amunts works with a team of talented scientists. One of her colleagues is Professor Karl Zilles. Their main goal is to create a detailed map of the human brain. They want to build a three-dimensional (3D) atlas. This atlas will show all the tiny structures inside the brain.

This special map will help scientists see and understand the brain's complex parts. It will also show how these parts function. By understanding the brain better, we can learn more about how it controls our bodies. This knowledge can also help us fight brain diseases. These include conditions like depression, addiction, dementia, and Parkinson's disease. This amazing 3D brain model is often called the "Big Brain."
