The Kauaʻi cave amphipod, also known as Spelaeorchestia koloana, is a tiny crustacean that lives only in caves. In the Hawaiian language, it is called ʻuku noho ana. This special creature can only be found on the island of Kauaʻi in Hawaii.

This amphipod is quite small, measuring about 7 to 10 millimeters long. That's less than half an inch! It doesn't have eyes, which makes sense since it lives in dark caves. Scientists know of only 10 groups of these amphipods living in different caves. They help keep the cave clean by eating dead plants and other decaying stuff.

What is the Kauaʻi Cave Amphipod?

The Kauaʻi cave amphipod is a type of amphipod. Amphipods are small crustaceans, like tiny shrimp. They belong to a group of animals called Arthropods, which also includes insects and spiders. This specific amphipod is unique because it has adapted to life in caves.

Living in the Dark

Because it lives in total darkness, the Kauaʻi cave amphipod has no need for eyes. Over many, many years, it has evolved to lose its eyesight. Instead, it uses other senses, like touch and smell, to find its way around and find food in the dark cave environment.

Where Does it Live?

The Kauaʻi cave amphipod is an endemic species. This means it is found naturally in only one specific place in the world. For this amphipod, that place is the caves on the island of Kauaʻi, Hawaii. It cannot be found anywhere else!

Its Special Home

These amphipods need the unique conditions of the Kauaʻi caves to survive. The caves provide a stable temperature and humidity. They also offer a steady supply of decaying plant matter, which is the amphipod's main food source.

What Does it Eat?

The Kauaʻi cave amphipod is a detritivore. This means it eats detritus, which is dead and decaying plant matter or other organic material. In the cave, this might include leaves, roots, or other bits of plants that have washed in. By eating this material, the amphipod helps to recycle nutrients in its ecosystem.

Who are its Enemies?

Even in the dark caves, the Kauaʻi cave amphipod has a main predator. Its biggest enemy is another special cave animal: the Kauaʻi cave wolf spider (Adelocosa anops). This wolf spider is also endemic to the Kauaʻi caves and is eyeless, just like the amphipod. It hunts the amphipods for food.

Why is it Endangered?

The Kauaʻi cave amphipod is listed as an endangered species. This means there are very few of them left, and they are at high risk of disappearing forever. It is protected under the Endangered Species Act in the United States. This law helps to save animals and plants that are in danger.

Conservation Efforts

The amphipod is also on the IUCN Red List. The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) is a group that keeps track of the conservation status of species around the world. Being on the Red List means scientists are worried about its survival. Efforts are being made to protect its cave habitat and ensure its future.
