Kaumana Cave is an amazing lava tube found on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. It was formed by a huge lava flow from the Mauna Loa volcano way back in 1881.

This cave is super long! It stretches for about 1.365 miles (that's over 2 kilometers). This makes it one of the longest lava tubes in the entire world.

What is Kaumana Cave?

Kaumana Cave is a special type of cave called a lava tube. Imagine a river of hot, flowing lava. As the top and sides of the lava river cool down, they form a solid crust. But the lava underneath keeps flowing, creating a hollow tunnel. That's how a lava tube is made!

This particular tube was created during an eruption of Mauna Loa, one of the largest volcanoes on Earth. The lava flowed for miles, leaving behind this incredible underground passage.

Exploring the Cave

Kaumana Cave is located close to the city of Hilo on the Big Island. It's a popular spot for visitors because it's pretty easy to get into.

The main entrance to the cave is through something called a "skylight." This is like a big hole in the ceiling of the lava tube where the roof collapsed. It lets light in and makes it simple to climb down into the cave.

While the main entrance is open to the public, it's important to know that some parts of Kaumana Cave are on private land. This means you can explore the public sections, but you should always respect private property signs and not go where you're not allowed.
