Kaunakakai (pronounced kown-uh-kuh-KAH-ee) is a town in Hawaii. It is located in Maui County, on the island of Molokaʻi. Kaunakakai is the biggest town on Molokaʻi.

This town has the largest port on the island. It also has the longest pier in all of Hawaii. In the 1930s, a fun song called "The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai" made the town famous. This started a tradition of choosing an honorary mayor for the town.

History of Kaunakakai

In the mid-1800s, King Kamehameha V sometimes spent his summers on Molokaʻi. He had a home in Kaunakakai. The main street of Kaunakakai, called Ala Malama Avenue, was named after the king's summer home.

Around 1935, a special song was written. It was for the celebration of the first honorary mayor. This happened during a visit by a famous actor named Warner Baxter. The town had a big seven-day party to celebrate his "election" as mayor!
